In Home and Companion Care

The free online dictionary defines a companion as "1.a. A person who accompanies or associates with another; a comrade.b. A domestic partner.2. A person employed to assist, live with, or travel with another".
Companion care can then be described as the type of care where an individual stays with a client and helps with his or her activities of daily living (ADLs). The individuals that do these are usually called caregivers.

Advantanges of companion care include the following:
1. Safety: When two are present the possibility of overpowering one reduces by half. If a client is about to fall, the companion will immediately prevent the fall, thus reducing the chances of a whole lot of complications associated with falling like head injuries, fractures, etc
2. Emotional balance: One can never over-estimate the power of a companion, that is why we have partners, spouses, friends, etc. There is always the need for someone to be by one's side. This includes feeling someone's touch, hearing someone's voice, having someone help, or just knowing that someone that care is available.
3. Physical help: Some clients need help with bathing, cooking, shopping and other ADLs (Activities of Daily Living). These, their relatives cannot do while at work.

These few and more makes it relevant to get a companion for whoever that needs it.

Permit me to say that it is best to use someone who has an experience in healthcare as a companion. It is however alarming to see so many unqualified caregivers in people’s home nowadays. The question then arises why pay someone who does not have any experience in healthcare to do the same job when you can get a healthcare professional as the same amount? This question must leave many people’s mouth wide open. Probably they think it cost more! Home care agencies pay virtually the same amount to a Certified nurse assistant that they will give to a new high school graduate who is just looking for a job.
